What is rhetoric and superfluous language?
We have been learning how to write effective instructions and what the key features of this genre are.
As part of this learning, we have also looked at what we writing features we don’t need to use. To do this, we looked at one set of instructions that contained far too much rhetoric and superfluous language. Our job was to re-write the instructions, taking out all the words that we considered not to be necessary. By doing this, we found out exactly what rhetoric and superfluous language means.
We found this challenging because we had to think really carefully about whether we had removed so much detail that our instructions didn’t make sense anymore. It was a really fine balance to find, but we managed it and it will certainly help us to write a clear set of instructions ourselves.
